Melbourne music platform connects world-class musicians with students all over the world.
Monday, 5 October 2020, Melbourne – AEYONS, a new online music teaching platform based in Melbourne has launched, offering work to hundreds of musicians across the world who have all suffered dramatic work and income losses due to Covid-19.
The platform connects world-class musicians and students across the globe to teach and learn a variety of musical instruments, in a move which has been a lifeline for many. Since the platform opened in March this year, hundreds of hours of private tutorials have taken place, offering incredible expertise to music students of all ages from musicians from world-renowned orchestras.
“The feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive – from students and musicians alike – who are deeply passionate about keeping music alive even during a global pandemic,” explained Geoff Collinson, a Melbourne-based musician and businessman who founded AEYONS this year.
“With AEYONS, students of all ages and backgrounds are offered the opportunity to learn from world leading artists, including eminent musicians from the London, Chicago, Los Angeles and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, platinum selling recording artists, teachers from national and international Conservatoriums and Festivals. It’s an opportunity like no other”.
Geoff has a 30-year professional music career under his belt, including Principal Horn of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Head of Brass at the University of Melbourne and co-founder of the Melbourne International Festival of Brass. He turned his hand to the business side of music almost a decade ago, which led to the launch of AEYONS – shorthand for “Another Eight Year Overnight Success”.
Lessons take place 1-to-1 on AEYONS’ own state-of-the-art video conferencing platform, and a scheduling tool ensures lesson times suit both teacher and student no matter what part of the world they find themselves in. With such a level of flexibility, and sound and video quality, the platform will continue to thrive even as musicians return to their orchestral work and students go back to school or their own day jobs. As all learning is conducted remotely, musicians and students alike can even travel as they continue connecting via AEYONS.
AEYONS already works with nearly 150 faculty members from over 17 different countries, including almost 40 across Australia. Hundreds of lessons have now been taught in 30min to 1-hour slots. Prices start from $50 and are set by each musician.
Students can apply for tuition on a rolling basis via the website, selecting their preferred musician and booking a free consultation with them to decide on a tailored educational plan. From there, different lessons can be booked quickly and seamlessly via the website.
David Jones is an award-winning drummer-percussionist, recipient of the Melbourne Prize for Music 2010. David has been unable to perform since the pandemic first struck in March. He has described AEYONS as a “lifeline” during these times. “Not only for my earning, which has certainly needed a helping hand, but it has also contributed to a sense of wellbeing and given opportunities to teach new and old students online. I’ve been performing and teaching music for over 40 years. It is fundamental for my life – being in lockdown in Melbourne has been extremely tough, and I’m overwhelmingly grateful to be able to continue my private teaching via AEYONS. It’s an amazing platform.”
The AEYONS leadership team has music and education at its heart, with Gérard Patacca now joining as CEO. Gérard arrives with a wealth of experience following 10 years as General Manager of the Opera Australia Orchestra and a journey as a musician that took him across the globe. As a French Horn player there was study and engagements in Germany as well as in Australia with most of the professional orchestras including the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras. Gérard also taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for 5 years.
“It’s never been more important to connect people, which is why I am particularly excited to join the AEYONS team. Our main goal is to change lives through music. Using the latest technology, we are giving more people than ever before access to the best of the best”, Gérard comments.
The team is also supported by a board of directors with a significant range of expertise – and above all, a huge passion for musical education.
